How to Write a Furniture Design Brief
A great brief can turn an average design into an excellent one. Six lessons from a decade of practice.
A design project's success is usually set in the first week. The clearer your brief, the more predictable the outcome. In this post I share six practical pointers from 400+ projects.
1. Define the user
Who will use this furniture? Age, body, frequency of use…
2. Measure the space
Design isn't abstract — it takes up room. Share plan, section and photos.
3. State the budget
No budget, no design. "10K-15K" beats "low but unclear" every time.
4. Provide style references
Pinterest, Behance, real store photos. Examples you like AND dislike both help.
5. Set the deadline
Opening? Move-in? Trade show? The design schedule depends on it.
6. Share producer info
Workshop capability, machines, past parts produced — constraints free the design.
